Azasite

AzaSite is a 1% sterile aqueous topical ophthalmic solution of azithromycin.  AzaSite is used to treat eye infections caused by bacteria. AzaSite is also commonly used for other ocular problems not listed by the manufacturer.

AzaSite (with warm compresses and lid scrubs) is a great solution for patients who have chronic eyelid disease (e.g. blepharitis due to meibomian gland dysfunction). Many doctors are prescribing AzaSite because it is a good antibacterial drug and has anti-inflammatory properties as well.  In addition, it is safer than it’s steroid counterparts.

In addition, it seems to have value in treating styes (hordeolum) and chalazia because it penetrates tissues better than most topical antibiotics.

Supplied: Azasite is packaged in a 2.5ml solution.

Dose: AzaSite is dosed one drop TWO times a day (8 to 12 hours apart) for the first TWO days and ONCE a day  every day after.

Children:  Azasite is approved in children 1 year and older.

Pregnancy:  (Class B) If there is a clinical need for a Azasite, it is considered safe to use it.

Side effects:  The most common side effects may include:

  • blurred vision
  • stuffy nose
  • mild stinging, burning, or irritation of your eyes

Warning:

You should not wear contact lenses while you still have active symptoms of the eye infection you are treating.

Use AzaSite for the full prescribed length of time. Your symptoms may improve before the infection is completely cleared.
