Lumigan

LUMIGAN® 0.01% (bimatoprost ophthalmic solution) is used for the treatment of high eye pressure, also called intraocular pressure (IOP), in people with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension.  Reduction of the intraocular pressure starts approximately 4 hours after the first administration with maximum effect reached within approximately 8 to 12 hours.

Supplied:

  • 2.5 mL fill in a 5 mL container
  • 5 mL fill in a 10 mL container
  • 7.5 mL fill in a 10 mL container

Dose: Lumigan is usually given as 1 drop in each affected eye once daily, in the evening.

Children: Use in pediatric patients below the age of 16 years is not recommended because of potential safety concerns related to increased pigmentation following long-term chronic use.

Pregnancy: (Category C) Lumigan® should be administered during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus.

Side Effects: The most common side effects are eye redness, growth of eyelashes, and itchy eyes.

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction to Lumigan: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Stop using Lumigan and call your doctor at once if you have a serious side effect such as:

  • redness, swelling, itching, or pain in or around your eye;
  • oozing or discharge from your eye;
  • increased sensitivity to light;
  • vision changes.

Precautions: When only one eye is treated, there is a possibility of eyelash changes in the eye treated with LUMIGAN® 0.01%. These changes may result in differences between the eyes in eyelash length, thickness, darkness, number of eyelashes, and/or direction of eyelash growth. These changes are usually reversible upon stopping LUMIGAN® 0.01% therapy.

Macular edema, including cystoid macular edema, has been reported during treatment with bimatoprost ophthalmic solution. Lumigan® 0.01%  should be used with caution in aphakic patients, in pseudophakic patients with a torn posterior lens capsule, or in patients with known risk factors for macular edema.

Also, Do not use Lumigan while wearing contact lenses.  Lumigan may contain a preservative that can discolor soft contact lenses. Wait at least 15 minutes after using Lumigan before putting in your contact lenses.
